Coins of Austria
The Republic of Austria was born in 1918 after the end of the First World War, with the dissolution of the pre-existing Austro-Hungarian Empire and the transformation of the state into a republic. During the imperial period various currencies were adopted over the years, the Austro-Hungarian Gulden until 1892, replaced by the Austro-Hungarian Crown which remained legal tender until the fall of the Empire. The new Republic introduced the Shilling, which was the country's national currency from 1925 to the introduction of the Euro, in 2002, with the exception of the period of the Second World War, in which Austria was annexed to the Germany and temporarily lost its national sovereignty. All Austrian coins are minted by Münze Österreich, the state mint based in Vienna.
