25 years since the creation of the European Monetary Institute
The Obverse depicts, on the right, the portrait of the first President of the EMI, Alexandre Lamfalussy. Immediately below the effigy is the economist's name 'A. Lamfalussy' and, further down, the initials 'BE' (identifying Belgium) and the minting year can be seen. Above, on the left-hand side of the coin, close to the inner edge, is the circular inscription 'European Monetary Institute', with the symbol of the Belgian Mint Director (which corresponds to the coat of arms of the municipality of Herzele) and the mark of the Utrecht mint below it. In the centre, between the inscription and the portrait, is the year '1994' (the year of the creation of the Institute and Lamfalussy's subsequent appointment), followed at the bottom by the inscription 'EMI' (larger). Immediately below the acronym, several coins are depicted, one above the other, with the following engravings: the Euro symbol, the inscription 'ECU' and the abbreviation of the former Belgian national currency 'BEF'. To the right, adjacent to the portrait, the author's initials 'LL' can be seen. On the outer part are the 12 five-pointed stars, symbol of the European Union. The coin's Reverse is the new common side of Euro coins, with the face value '2' on the left and the European continent on the right, overlapped by the inscription 'EURO'. Six vertical lines with a star at each end are placed behind the Europe's image.
