On the Obverse we find in the centre the portrait of King Albert II of Belgium, facing to the left, while on the outer part are the 12 five-pointed stars, the symbol of the European Union, with the year of mintage at the bottom and the sovereign's monogram (a crowned A) to the right. The coin's Reverse is the common side of Euro coins, with the face value "5 EURO CENT" and the image of Europe's place in the world. Six diagonal lines with a star at each end are placed behind the globe.

At the bottom is the minting year, enclosed between the mint mark and the mintmaster's mark, while on the outer part are the 12 five-pointed stars, the symbol of the European Union. The changes to the original design were made in response to requests from the European Commission, which recommended the presence of the name or symbol of the issuing state on the national sides. The coin's Reverse is the common side of Euro coins, with the face value "5 EURO CENT" and the image of Europe's place in the world.
