Coins of Estonia
The Republic of Estonia declared its independence on February 24, 1918 and started to mint its own currency, the Estonian Mark, in the following year. In 1928 the Estonian Mark was replaced by the Estonian Crown, which was legal tender until 1940, when Estonia was occupied by the Soviet Union which imposed the circulation of its own currency, the Ruble. The country regained independence on August 20, 1991 with the collapse of the Soviet Union, and the Estonian Crown returned to be legal tender. Starting from January 1, 2011 Estonia became the 17th nation to adopt and mint Euro coins, which replaced the Crown. The coins of Estonia are minted by the Finnish Mint of Vantaa.
