100th anniversary of self-government in Åland
The Obverse depicts the characteristic landscape of the Åland Islands (Finland's archipelago of around 6,500 islands and reefs, the only Finnish province to be autonomous and Swedish-speaking), comprising, in the lower part, a stretch of sea with nautical signs, the prow of a boat and a hand with a compass, in the centre the horizon is visible and above, on the left, clouds are drawn. Close to the inner edge, the following circular inscriptions are impressed: on the upper part 'ÅLANDS SJÄLVSTYRELSE 100 ÅR' and on the lower part 'AHVENANMAAN ITSEHALLINTO 100 VUOTTA', meaning '100 YEARS OF AUTONOMY OF THE ÅLAND ISLANDS' in Swedish and Finnish respectively. The two inscriptions are separated by two diamond-shaped buoys and, above the buoys, the mintmark can be seen on the left and the initials 'FI' (identifying Finland) on the right. Also on the right, positioned above the horizon and next to the identification of Finland, is the minting year. On the outer part 12 five-pointed stars, symbol of the European Union. The coin's Reverse is the new common side of Euro coins, with the face value '2' on the left and the European continent on the right, overlapped by the inscription 'EURO'. Six vertical lines with a star at each end are placed behind the Europe's image.
