Franc coins of French Fourth Republic
At the end of the Second World War, a Provisional Government was established in France, headed by General Charles de Gaulle, who guaranteed the government functions until the approval of the new constitution (13 october 1946), act that marked the formal beginning of the Fourth Republic. In this catalog, considering that there were no changes of any kind in the coinage, the two periods are treated together.
The coins of the Fourth Republic are absolutely similar to those of the last serie of the Third Republic, in the values of 1, 2, 5, 10, 20 and 50 cents, as well as those of 1, 2 and 5 francs. A new serie, known as "Giraud type", was coined later for the values of 10, 20 and 50 Francs (in bronze-aluminum), and 100 Francs (in cupronickel).
The coins of the Fourth Republic were minted in two mints: Paris (no mint mark) and Beaumont le Roger (mint mark B).
The historical period was short-lived and ended in 1958, when it was replaced by the new semi-presidential system of the Fifth Republic. This section also includes the year 1959, (which formally belongs to the < strong>Fifth Republic) because it has the same coins of that of the Fourth, and was the last year before the introduction of the so-called "new Franc".
