Sachsen: Zwinger Palace in Dresden
The Obverse depicts a view of the Kronentor ('Crown Gate') from the inner garden of the Zwinger Palace, one of Dresden's most famous monuments. At the bottom of the design is the inscription representing the German Länd to which the coin refers, i.e. 'SACHSEN' with the D sign identifying Germany immediately above it. To the upper left is the minting year, while to the right are the engraver's initials and the mintmark, which can relate to one of the following five mints:
- A - Berlin
- D - Munich
- F - Stuttgart
- G - Karlsruhe
- J - Hamburg
On the outer part are the 12 five-pointed stars, symbol of the European Union. The coin's Reverse is the new common side of Euro coins, with the face value "2" on the left and the European continent on the right, overlapped by the inscription "EURO". Six vertical lines with a star at each end are placed behind the Europe's image.
Edge: finely milled, with the inscription 'EINIGKEIT UND RECHT UND FREIHEIT' (concord, justice and freedom) followed by the emblem of the federal eagle, in incuse.
