Berlin: Charlottenburg Castle
The Obverse depicts Charlottenburg Castle, Berlin's only historic building to have survived the Second World War. In the upper part of the coin are, on the left, the minting year and, on the right, the 'D' sign identifying Germany. In the lower part of the design are, to the left and superimposed on the design, the engraver's initials 'BB', while in the centre is the inscription representing the German Länd to which the coin refers, i.e. 'BERLIN', with the mint mark immediately below, which may relate to one of the following five mints:
- A - Berlin
- D - Munich
- F - Stuttgart
- G - Karlsruhe
- J - Hamburg
On the outer part are the 12 five-pointed stars, symbol of the European Union. The coin's Reverse is the new common side of Euro coins, with the face value "2" on the left and the European continent on the right, overlapped by the inscription "EURO". Six vertical lines with a star at each end are placed behind the Europe's image.
Edge: finely milled, with the inscription 'EINIGKEIT UND RECHT UND FREIHEIT' (concord, justice and freedom) followed by the emblem of the federal eagle, in incuse.
