50th Anniversary of the Warsaw Genuflection
The Obverse depicts the Warsaw Genuflection, which took place on 7 December 1970, when the then Chancellor of Germany, Willy Brandt, visiting the monument dedicated to the Warsaw ghetto uprising during the Nazi period, surprisingly knelt down. On the upper left-hand side of the coin is the circular inscription '50 JAHRE KNIEFALL', while a 7-armed candlestick can be seen at the bottom, one of the two on either side of the monument; above the candlestick is the minting year with the mintmark underneath, which can be related to one of the following five mints:
- A - Berlin
- D - Munich
- F - Stuttgart
- G - Karlsruhe
- J - Hamburg
In the centre is Chancellor Willy Brandt kneeling in front of the monument, which can be glimpsed on the right at the top of steps on which a wreath is placed, with the letter 'D' identifying Germany underneath. At the bottom, immediately below the chancellor's figure is the circular inscription 'VON WARSCHAU' (which together with the inscription on the left means '50 years since the Warsaw Genuflection'). The author's initials 'BB' can be seen at the top (the author Bodo Broschat won the competition for the design of these 2 euro commemorative coins). On the outer part are the 12 five-pointed stars, symbol of the European Union. The coin's Reverse is the new common side of Euro coins, with the face value "2" on the left and the European continent on the right, overlapped by the inscription "EURO". Six vertical lines with a star at each end are placed behind the Europe's image.
