The Obverse, in the centre of the coin, depicts two elements of the historical period of Charlemagne combined together: the sovereign's monogram and the octagon of Aachen Cathedral; in the centre of the design, slightly shifted to the bottom right, are the author's initials 'TW'. In the upper part of the coin is the circular inscription 'KARL DER GROßE' ('Charlemagne'), while in the lower part, below the image, are the years '748 - 814', written in an arc. Also at the bottom, but partially superimposed on the design, are: on the left, the minting year and on the right, the sign 'D' identifying Germany with the mintmark next to it, which may relate to one of the following five mints:
- A - Berlin
- D - Munich
- F - Stuttgart
- G - Karlsruhe
