Coins of Greece
The Hellenic Republic declared independence from the Ottoman Empire in 1822 and introduced its own currency, the Dracma, in 1832. The currency remained legal tender in Greece until the introduction of the Euro, in 2002, experiencing two periods of strong devaluation, one during the Second World War and the other in 1953, when "new" drachmas were minted to replace the previous ones with very high exchange ratios (the first with an incredible 1:50.000.000.000, the second 1:1000).
All Greek coins are minted by the Mint of Athens, with the exception of some series dated 2002 when, due to the high quantity required, the coins were commissioned from the mints of Finland, France and Spain.
