On the Obverse the design of an owl, which appeared on an ancient Athenian 4 drachma coin. To the right the inscription '1 EYPΩ', above the mintmark. At the bottom the engraver's signature. On the outside are 12 five-pointed stars, the symbol of the European Union, between which, at the bottom, is the minting year. On the 2002 coins, if minted by the Finnish mint, there is an additional mintmark 'S' inserted in the star at 6 o'clock. The coin's Reverse is the old common side of Euro coins, with the face value "1" on the left and the European Union (before its enlargement) on the right, overlapped by the inscription "EURO". Six vertical lines with a star at each end are placed behind the Europe's image.
Edge: interrupted milled.
