25th Centenary of the Battle of Marathon
On the Obverse a soldier of the infantry of ancient Greece, depicted on the silhouette of a shield and always superimposed on the shield is a bird, symbolising the birth of western civilisation in its present form. Above, in an arc, the inscription 'MAPAΘΩNAE 2500 XPONIA' preceded by the mintmark of Athens (the Anthemion flower, represented stylised). At the bottom, also in an arc, the inscription 'ΕΛΛΗΝΙΚΗ ΔΗΜΟΚΡΑΤΙΑ 490 π.x. 2010 M.x.'. On the outside are 12 five-pointed stars, the symbol of the European Union. The coin's Reverse is the new common side of Euro coins, with the face value '2' on the left and the European continent on the right, overlapped by the inscription "EURO". Six vertical lines with a star at each end are placed behind the Europe's image.
Edge: finely milled, with the inscription "ΕΛΛΗΝΙΚΗ ΔΗΜΟΚΡΑΤΙΑ *" (Hellenic Republic), in incuse.
