2400th anniversary of the Founding of the Platonic Academy
On the Obverse, a portrait of Plato, facing left; also on the left, in an arc, the inscription in Greek '2400 years since the foundation of Plato's Academy' and 'ΕΛΛΗΝΙΚΗ ΔΗΜΟΚΡΑΤΙΑ'. On the right the minting year and the mintmark of Athens (the Anthemion flower, depicted stylised). On the outside are 12 five-pointed stars, the symbol of the European Union. The coin's Reverse is the new common side of Euro coins, with the face value '2' on the left and the European continent on the right, overlapped by the inscription "EURO". Six vertical lines with a star at each end are placed behind the Europe's image.
Edge: finely milled, with the inscription "ΕΛΛΗΝΙΚΗ ΔΗΜΟΚΡΑΤΙΑ *" (Hellenic Republic), in incuse.

100th anniversary of the Union of Crete with Greece
The Obverse depicts Cretan rebels raising the Greek flag, as a symbol of Crete's fight to unite with Greece. At the top in an arc is the inscription 'ΕΛΛΗΝΙΚΗ ΔΗΜΟΚΡΑΤΙΑ' while at the bottom and also in an arc is the inscription '100 years of the union of Crete with Greece' in Greek. On the right the mintmark (the Anthemion flower, depicted stylised) and the dates '1913 - 2013'. On the outside are 12 five-pointed stars, the symbol of the European Union.
