400 years since the death of El Greco
The Obverse depicts a portrait of Domenikos Theotokopoulos (known as 'El Greco'), while in the background is a figure representative of the painter's work and technique. To the left is the minting year and below it the artist's signature; to the upper right is the mintmark of Athens (the Anthemion flower, depicted stylised), to the upper left, in an arc, the inscription 'ΕΛΛΗΝΙΚΗ ΔΗΜΟΚΡΑΤΙΑ', and finally, at the bottom, again in an arc, the inscription 'DOMENIKOS THEOTOKOPOULOS 1541-1614'. On the outside are 12 five-pointed stars, the symbol of the European Union. The coin's Reverse is the new common side of Euro coins, with the face value '2' on the left and the European continent on the right, overlapped by the inscription "EURO". Six vertical lines with a star at each end are placed behind the Europe's image.
