150 years since the Arkadi Monastery burning
The Obverse, at the centre of the coin, depicts the Monastery of Arkadi, where a famous event took place during the Cretan uprising against the Ottomans (943 Greeks who had taken refuge inside the monastery died there, after three days of battle, preferring to blow themselves up using barrels of gunpowder in order not to surrender). On the left is the arched inscription 'ΕΛΛΗΝΙΚΗ ΔΗΜΟΚΡΑΤΙΑ', while on the right, at the top, is the minting year. At the bottom, immediately below the design on the right, is the author's monogram; further down, in the centre is the inscription 'ΜΟΝΗ ΑΡΚΑΔΙΟΥ' (Monastery of Arkadi in Greek) with the mintmark of Athens underneath. On the outside are 12 five-pointed stars, the symbol of the European Union. The coin's Reverse is the new common side of Euro coins, with the face value '2' on the left and the European continent on the right, overlapped by the inscription "EURO". Six vertical lines with a star at each end are placed behind the Europe's image.

The Obverse, on the right-hand side of the coin, features a portrait, facing left, of Dimitri Mitropoulos (Greek musician and composer), depicted in a background of musical notes. On the left-hand side, on two lines, are the circular inscriptions '120° ΧΡΟΝΙΑ ΑΠΟ ΤΗ ΓΕΝΝΗΣΗ ΤΟΥ ΔΗΜΗΤΡΗ ΜΗΤΡΟΠΟΥΛΟΥ' (120th anniversary of the birth of Dimitri Mitropoulos in Greek) and 'ΛΛΗΝΙΚΗ ΔΗΜΟΚΡΑΤΙΑ' (Hellenic Republic) followed by the minting year and the mintmark of Athens. To the lower right, overlapped on the effigy, is the author's monogram.
