70th anniversary of the union of the Dodecanese with Greece
The Obverse depicts a rose surrounded by a sea formed by stylised waves; the rose is one of the symbols of Rhodes, often used in coin mintings, and the one designed in this commemorative coin is inspired by a coin minted by the ancient city of Rhodes and considered an emblem of the Dodecanese. In the upper part, outside the design but adjacent to it, is the circular inscription '1948-2018 Η ΕΝΩΣΗ ΤΩΝ ΔΩΔΕΚΑΝΗΣΩΝ ΜΕ ΤΗΝ ΕΛΛΑΔΑ' (1948-2018 UNION OF THE DODECANESE TO GREECE in Greek), while in the lower part is the arched inscription 'ΕΛΛΗΝΙΚΗ ΔΗΜΟΚΡΑΤΙΑ' (HELLENIC REPUBLIC), enclosed between the mintmark on the left and the author's monogram on the right. On the outside are 12 five-pointed stars, the symbol of the European Union. The coin's Reverse is the new common side of Euro coins, with the face value '2' on the left and the European continent on the right, overlapped by the inscription "EURO". Six vertical lines with a star at each end are placed behind the Europe's image.
