Coins of Italy
The history of Italian coins begin with the unification of 1861, when the new Kingdom adopted the Lira (which was already used in the former Kingdom of Sardinia and in other italian states) as official currency.
From a collector point of view, the Italian coinage can be divided into three distinct periods: the first is the Kingdom of Italy (1861-1946), the second is about the Lira in the Italian Republic (1946-2001), and finally the current period, with the introduction of Euro coins.
All Italian coins are currently minted by the State Mint of Rome, while in the past there were other mints located in large Italian cities (the last to end the production was Milan, in 1892).
