Coins of Latvia
The Republic of Latvia declared its independence in 1918, at the end of First World War I, initially adopting the Latvian ruble as its currency, with a fixed exchange rate of 1:2 compared to the Russian Ruble. In 1922 was introduced the Latvian Lats, a new currency which replaced the Ruble with a 50:1 ratio, and which remains legal tender until 1940, when Latvia was invaded and annexed to the Soviet Union and the official currency became the Russian Ruble. In 1991 Latvia regained independence and in 1993 reintroduced the Lats, which returned to legal tender until 2014, when the country adopted the Euro, becoming the 21st country to mint the European currency.
Having no own mint, over the years Latvia has relied on several European mints to produce their own coins. Values in Euro are made in Germany, Netherlands and Lithuania.
