Coins of Lithuania
The Republic of Lithuania declared its indipendence in 1918, and introduced in 1922 its own currency, the Lithuanian Litas, which was legal tender until 1940, when the territory of the republic was occupied by the Soviet Union which introduced his own currency, the Ruble. The country regained independence in 1991, after the collapse of the Soviet Union, and initially used a temporary currency, the Talona (only banknotes were issued in that period). In 1993 the Litas was reintroduced, and remained legal tender until it was replaced by the Euro in 2015, when Lithuania became the 23rd country to mint coins in the European currency.
Lithuanian coins are minted by the Vilnius National Mint.
