Coins of Luxembourg
The Grand Duchy of Luxembourg became an independent state in 1839 and, after an initial period when it adopted the Belgian Franc, introduced in 1848 its own currency, the Luxembourgish Franc. In 1921, due to the economic monetary union with Belgium, the value of the Luxembourgish Franc was fixed to that of Belgian Franc, and the currencies of the two countries could circulate freely in both states. The Franc was legal tender until 2002, when it was replaced by the the Euro.
Luxembourg does not have its own mint, and the minting of its own coins is committed to various European mints.
