Coins of Malta
The Republic of Malta achieved its independence from the United Kingdom in 1964, replacing in 1972 its currency, the Maltese Pound (used in the country since 1825) with a new currency, the Maltese Lira. The Lira was replaced by the the Euro in 2008, when the country began to mint its own series.
The Maltese Lira coins were minted by the Mint of Malta, which ceased production in 1995, while the mintage of Euro coins was performed initially by the French mint of Pessac, then (from 2009 to 2015) by the Dutch mint of Utrecht, and again (from 2016) by the French mint.
