Maltese Lira coins
The Maltese Lira was introduced in the Republic of Malta in 1972, when it replaced the Maltese Pound, with an exchange rate of 1:1. The Lira was divided into cents, which were further divided into mils (with a ratio of 1 cent = 10 mils).
During the circulation period of the Lira, which was the official currency of Malta from 1972 to 2007, three different sets of coins were minted; the first issue took place in 1972, and included the 2, 3 and 5 mils coins, as well as the 1, 2, 5, 10 and 50 cents coins, and the 25 cents value, added in 1975; the second set was issued in 1986, and was made up of 1, 2, 5, 10, 25 and 50 cents pieces, with the addition of the new 1 Lira coin; the third set, coined from 1991, included the same values as the previous one. It has a different obverse design, while the reverse was similar to the second set, exception from some small details.
The Maltese Lira was replaced on 1 January 2008 by the Euro, with an exchange rate of 1 Euro = 0.4293 Lira.
