Coins of Monaco
The Principality of Monaco is a city state, borded on three sides by the France (the fourth side is borded by Mediterranean Sea), independent since 1297. Due to monetary agreements with France, Monaco has always used its currency, the French Franc, starting to produce its own currency, named Monégasque Franc, only in 1837. The exchange ratio between the two currencies has always been 1:1 and they were legal tender in both countries.
Due to these agreements with France the Principality of Monaco, which is not part of the European Union, is allowed to use the European currency and to mint its own series in Euros, which are very interesting for collectors due to their extreme rarity.
All Monaco coins are minted by the French mint of Pessac.
