Coins of Portugal
Portuguese numismatic history can be divided into three large distinct areas: the first concerning the Kingdom of Portugal, from its independence in 1143 until the end of the monarchical era (in 1910), with its official currency, the Real Portuguese; the second concerning the period of the Portuguese Republic, from 1910 to the entry into the Euro area (2002), with the Portuguese Escudo as official currency; the last one (from 2002 to date) is the current Euro period.
All Portuguese coins are minted by the "Imprensa Nacional - Casa da Moeda", the state Mint based in Lisbon.
