500th birthday of Fernão Mendes Pinto
The Obverse, in the centre of the coin, depicts a sailing ship furrowing a sea formed by words referring to Portugal, Lisbon, the book of Fernão Mendes Pinto (Portuguese explorer) and some of the destinations of his travels. At the bottom is the arched inscription "PORTUGAL" and at the top is the circular inscription "FERNÃO MENDES PINTO". On the left are the year '"511" and further down, between the inscriptions forming waves, the mintmark "INCM", while on the right, the minting year "2011" and, as on the left, mixed in between the words, the initials of the authors "IC-FB". On the outside part are placed 12 five-pointed stars, representing the European Union. The coin's Reverse is the new common side of Euro coins, with the face value "2" on the left and the European continent on the right, overlapped by the inscription "EURO". Six vertical lines with a star at each end are placed behind the Europe's image.
Edge: finely milled, with 7 castles and 5 heraldic coats of arms in incuse.
