Slovenian Tolar coins
The Slovenian Tolar was introduced on 8 october 1991, a few months after Slovenia's independence was proclaimed. The new currency replaced the Yugoslav Dinar with an exchange rate at par. The Tolar was subdivded into 100 cents, called stotin.
Initially coins were issued in values of 10, 20 and 50 stotin and 1, 2 and 5 Tolars. In the years from 1993 to 1997 several commemorative 5 Tolars coins were minted, with various subjects concerning the history of Slovenia. In the early 2000s new denominations were introduced, the 10 Tolars (2000), the 20 Tolars (2003) and the 50 Tolars (2003), as well as new commemorative coins, issued for circulation, of higher values, namely the 100 Tolars in 2001 (10th anniversary of independence) and the 500 Tolars from 2002. The Tolar ceased to be legal tender on 31 December 2006, replaced by the Euro.
