The Obverse depicts the portrait of Miguel de Cervantes Saavedra, with a quill pen intent on writing and the cursive inscription 'Cervantes' on the left. Immediately above it is the inscription "ESPANA", while the minting year is at the bottom centre, with the Madrid mintmark, a crowned "M", to its left. On the outside part are placed 12 five-pointed stars (four of which are in incuse), the symbol of the European Union. The coin's Reverse is the old common side of Euro coins, with the face value "50 EURO CENT" on the center-right part and the European Union (before its enlargement) on the left. Six vertical lines with a star at each end are placed behind the Europe's image.
