On the Obverse we find in the centre the portrait of John Paul II, facing to the left. To the right of the portrait is the inscription "GV - UP INC." indicating the sculptor and the engraver of the coin. On the outer part is the circular inscription "CITTA' DEL VATICANO", at the bottom, followed by the mintmark and the minting year, while the 12 five-pointed stars, symbol of the European Union, are at the top. The coin's Reverse is the old common side of Euro coins, with the face value "2" on the left and the European Union (before its enlargement) on the right, overlapped by the inscription "EURO". Six vertical lines with a star at each end are placed behind the Europe's image.
Edge: finely milled, with six "2" in incuse (repeated alternately from bottom to top and vice versa) and twelve five-pointed stars.
