75th anniversary of the Foundation of the Vatican City State
The Obverse, in the centre of the coin, depicts the perimeter of the Vatican City State, with St. Peter's Basilica and its square in the foreground. To the left is the circular inscription "75° ANNO DELLO STATO", while above, shifted to the right and still in an arc, are the dates "1929 - 2004". On the right are the mintmark "R"and, in smaller letters, the name of the sculptor "VEROI" and the engraver's initials "L.D.S. INC.". On the outer part at the top are the 12 five-pointed stars, symbol of the European Union, with the inscription "CITTÀ DEL VATICANO" at the bottom. The coin's Reverse is the old common side of Euro coins, with the face value "2" on the left and the European Union (before its enlargement) on the right, overlapped by the inscription "EURO". Six vertical lines with a star at each end are placed behind the Europe's image.
Edge: finely milled, with six "2" in incuse (repeated alternately from bottom to top and vice versa) and twelve five-pointed stars.
