2 Euro Commemorative coins Vatican City 2005
20th World Youth Day, held in Cologne in August 2005
The Obverse, in the centre of the coin, depicts the Cologne Cathedral surmounted by a comet. Surrounding it is the circular inscription "XX GIORNATA MONDIALE DELLA GIOVENTÙ". On the left is the name of the sculptor "LONGO" while on the right are the engraver's initials "E.L.F. INC.". On the outer part, at the top are the 12 five-pointed stars, symbol of the European Union, divided into two blocks of six by the mintmark "R" and the minting year "2005". At the bottom is the inscription "CITTÀ DEL VATICANO". The coin's Reverse is the old common side of Euro coins, with the face value "2" on the left and the European Union (before its enlargement) on the right, overlapped by the inscription "EURO". Six vertical lines with a star at each end are placed behind the Europe's image.
Edge: finely milled, with six "2" in incuse (repeated alternately from bottom to top and vice versa) and twelve five-pointed stars.
