150th anniversary of the death of Alessandro Manzoni
The Obverse, in the centre of the coin, depicts a portrait of the famous Italian poet and writer Alessandro Manzoni. The representation is completed, on the left, by a laurel branch placed in front of the effigy and, on the right, by a quill on an inkwell placed in front of a parchment, where the beginning of his masterpiece "The Betrothed" ("Quel ramo del lago di Como") is printed. In the upper part, near the inner edge, is the circular inscription "CITTA' DEL VATICANO", while in the left part, between the edge and the effigy, is the mintmark "R". In the lower part, immediately below the image, is the signature of the writer "Alessandro Manzoni", with the years "1873 - 2023" (the year of his death and the minting year) underneath. On the right, along the inner edge, between the end of the inscription and the inkwell, we can see the author's name "G. TITOTTO", followed by the engraver's initials, both written in an arc. On the outside part are placed 12 five-pointed stars, the symbol of the European Union. The coin's Reverse is the new common side of Euro coins, with the face value "2" on the left and the European continent on the right, overlapped by the inscription "EURO". Six vertical lines with a star at each end are placed behind the Europe's image.
