Vatican Lira coins
The Vatican City introduced its own currency, the Vatican Lira, following the Lateran Treaty (signed on 11 february 1929) which established the new sovereign state. The production of the coins was entrusted to the mint of Rome, which coined the currency until the adoption by the Vatican State of the Euro (in 2002) due to bilateral relations with Italy, although the Vatican City is not part of the European Union.
The Vatican Lira, similarly to the Sammarinese Lira, had a 1:1 exchange ratio with the Italian Lira and the three currencies had legal tender in all three States.
